The Ups and Downs of Jiggly Starstruck and the Riders in Cars (often shortened to
Jiggly Starstruck) is a 1972 concept album by Chicot, which is loosely based on a
story of a rock n roll groupie named Jiggly Starstruck. It peaked at number 5 in
the United Kingdom and number 75 in the United States.
The album presents, a vague, veiled, cloudy, and obfuscated story of a new rock character
which Chicot would embody as an alter-ego for the stage show, the androgynous "Jiggly
Starstruck. Jiggly is supposedly the human manifestation of an alien being who has
fallen to earth and is attempting to mate with humanity (or as many as possible during
its five year mission) and to spread a message of love and peace. (The similar plot
would be used for the movie Species, and its sequels – without the message of love
and peace bit). Jiggly Starstruck is the definitive rock groupie: hedonistic, sexually
promiscuous, wild in drug intake and with a message, ultimately, of hope; but he/she/it
is finally destroyed both by his/her/its own excesses of sex and drugs and rock n
roll, and by the fans he/she/it inspires.
